the question is whether it can pass on the house side under the leadership of speaker john boehner. i've talked to a couple of republicans this morning who are fairly optimistic that whatever comes out of the senate, whatever that deal is, it will pass the house this afternoon. although hard-core republican anti-tax folks are not going to vote for it. it still would likely have enough votes to pass. that's at least the mood of some folks i'm talking to today. guys, one of the big questions that's unresolved here was raised on a conference call with ceos arranged by the white house on friday night, on that white house conference call with ceos. one of the ceos asked tim geithner, i'm told by a participant on the call, whether a small deal would be enough to are prevent ratings agencies to downgrade u.s. debt. i'm told by this person on the call that the administration's response to that, they think a small deal would in fact be enough, but they wouldn't speak for the ratings agency. still a big unknown hanging out there, guys. >> and we know about some of the tough conversations we'l

john boehner is so inept, with eric cantor, he does -- is not capable of passing a bill. he tried it and had to pull it off the floor. wasn't unable to do with the constitution tells him to do. he then asks that the senate makes a bill to vote on. the senate passed a bill and they brought it in with 89 votes and then they turn around and now he is talking about wanting to an amendment. he is so scared of eric cantor. that is the situation we are in. host: the house the bell system has gone off. these alert members there is a vote. there is at least about 15 minutes before the house comes into session. it is currently in recess, subject to the call of the chair. the bells have gone off. it looks like they will be coming back into session. while we are waiting for that, we want to show you the democratic house leadership press conference that was held at two hours ago. here it is. but also gave us a thoughtful and detailed explanation of what has gone on and how it was that he and the president, working with the republican leaders in both houses, were able to come together

i think the priorities for john boehner may have been turned around. jared is an old jazz fan, as am i, and he knows that miles davis had a song called "so what" and i think that might be the background music right now as all the posturing is going on in public. the simple fact of the matter is that they are setting up the process for working out a deal after they have scared the daylights out of everybody, and it would seem to me that to quote another song, which is "what are you going to be doing new year's eve," i think that we'll be finding that these people are still hard at it and maybe calling congress into session tomorrow night which is a really rotten way to end the year. >> jared, explain for our viewers what it really means to go over the cliff. >> well, first of all, as a former jazz bassist i have to appreciate the citing of "so what" because that's a bass feature. look, i've got to say. going over the cliff at this point i think is better than accepting a bad deal, and i don't think that we should operate from the perspective that going

house speaker john boehner wanted it much higher at about a million dollars. this is somewhere in between. also, an extension of the unemployment insurance benefits. they're still hashing out some of the final details but it does appear as though the vice president was key in helping these negotiations to move forward. >> the negotiations go on there, kristen, we are watching the senate floor as they discuss the very details of that and debate it. keith, to you on this. political pointing out, biden's inclusion sets up a good cop/bad cop xen arroyo here among the democrats with the vice president and senator harry reid, those particular characters if you will in these negotiations. and was said by kristen that vice president -- the vice president and mitch mcconnell spoke at 12:45 a.m. and again this morning at 6:30 a.m. how do democrats use the good cop/bad cop to their advantage? >> i think the democrats have some sort of unanimity, not complete unanimity of opinion about the tax increase issue. the exact number i think is an area of negotiation that democra

that was when house speaker john boehner failed to bring his plan b for avoiding the fiscal cliff. he failed to bring that to a vote. the market has been selling off a bit every single day because nothing has happened to make investors feel like a deal is going to be reached. news of the meeting today happening at the white house this afternoon, that did help stocks make a comeback late yesterday. but they are selling off once again. it's fun ny you how things can change so quickly. there's just not that much confidence that a deal is going to get done. the market doesn't want a band-aid. one trader said it's too late for that. what the market is looking for is a full deal. >> all right. alison kosik at the new york stock exchange. thank you for that. >>> every 19 minutes someone dies of a drug overdose. most are not from elicit drugs, but fda drugs prescribed to millions of americans. dr. sanjay gupta reports. >> reporter: i rode along with lieutenant craig. he's been on the job for 30 years. he will tell you when he takes an overdose call, the usual suspect is a painkiller. >> wh

., carol, you'll recall when talks fell apart last week between house speaker john boehner and the president as the president departed for hawaii he talked to reporters in the briefing room and he said "see you next week" so i think we had a sense he would be coming back earlier than initially planned and it was just a matter of when, not if, and he'll be heading back tonight, that's local time so he'll be traveling overnight, it's quite a long flight, nine or ten hours and he'll be back in d.c. by thursday late morning. >> any behind the scene talks over the holiday? >> reporter: right now the white house has been in communication with senate democrats but i've checked in with my sources even this morning, republican sources and they're still not in touch with senate democrats or the white house, so that's pretty key. i guess you can understand it right now the white house and senate democrats are trying to cobble something together as they work towards putting forth a proposal. ultimately it needs republican support in the senate and the house. those discussions have to take place at some
